![]() ![]() The function i was referring to is entirely different where you choose 'Map Options' on the device's first screen in GE and then load the mapping data to your PC so you can then use MapInstall (directly or invoked via BaseCamp's 'Install Maps' option) to compile a custom map to send directly to an SD card. Yes, certainly Garmin Express offers that option of a smaller regional map to be loaded directly to the device. If it's on the internal memory then cure firmware usually must be loaded to allow Mass Storage Mode to work so the file can be removed. In the latter case if the faulty map is on a media card simply removing the card allows the device to function. ![]() A really bad map likely cannot be loaded on boot-up, depending on what's wrong with it the device will either ignore it or stick on the logo screen when displaying 'Loading Maps' message. The map might load but not function properly or not even be detected. The thing about IMG files is that they are more complex than most other files and therefore more prone to corruption. That might be a GPI, IMG or VPM file most commonly. It's more likely your original attempt was slightly corrupted in some minor way, check the IMG in GMapTool ('Details' or 'Info' tabs) if you can be bothered now:Īny faulty file is capable of soft-bricking a device. Post again if you need more info.īTW, because nuvi 205 doesn't have additional protection over GMA an older version of the unlocker should have worked unless the one you found was the very first one limited to the ability to unlock IMGs up to 2GB in which case it wouldn't have worked at all with an IMG over 2GB. On a media card it doesn't matter, remove the card and the device behaves normally. Best not to put unofficial unlocked maps in it's internal memory anyway, if the IMG is corrupt it could 'brick' the nuvi. So just use a 4GB SD card for your 205 and it can use the entire North American map. However with latest firmware loaded, your nuvi 205 can see IMG files of up to 4GB (with old fw the size limit was 2GB). You can load the map data to your PC via GarminExpress and use MapInstall to send a reduced size IMG to an SD card, unlock it with gimgunlock and then transfer it to your 205. You cannot use BaseCamp or other software to 'trim' an already compiled IMG file. Interesting, but POI navigation is possible, it just can't find any addresses searched via go to address function. The resulting map does show up, it does show up as 2020 in the map details, but there are no addresses in the database, so you can't navigate anywhere. I tried converting a map downloaded to a NUVI 55lm and ran it through gimgunlock.exe. img map file (one that was installed to a different Garmin unit) to move it to an older Garmin? Is there a tutorial for doing this? Note that I will likely need to reduce the map to just my geographical area since USA is more than 2GB and the device only has 1.7 GB on board. Basically, I have a Garmin Nuvi 55LM and I want to use its map update capabilities to keep my older Garmins (like a Nuvi 205) with new maps. *****I think I've been following some very outdated tutorials, which is why I'm having these problems. Any tips are welcome! The main stumbling block seems to be that the map is not recognized as unlocked for the older device. Would be nice to know if it's possible to use BaseCamp to trim the map to below 1.8GB and install it on other devices directly (without needing an SD card). system folder, run gimgunlock-0.04 on it, copy that to a sub-4GB microSD as gmapsupp.img in a Garmin directory, and finally it looks like it works. All I had to do was use Garmin Express on the LM unit to update the map, enable storage mode on the LM unit using the secret developers menu, copy gmapprom to my HDD from garmin's. I got gimgunlock-0.04.exe and this time copying it to the SD card produced the desired results. Apparently the issue was that I was using a gimgunlock from 2012. ![]()
